The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
