The star has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the UK's independent music venues.

Fender was given the award on 16 October as his new release People Watching was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots played in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Fender also participated, generating over £100k on his live tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations obtained funding support in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The idea that revenue from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

They are among the artists who gave their award funds to non-profits

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his award winnings to good deeds.

In they earned the award in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the band would give their cash to the non-profit War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she split her award across multiple charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Two years ago, they donated their winnings to the community center that developed their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their award to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected several local spots in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in that location were bought under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
