A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
